Regarding Bright Eyes, I don't rememb...@Wally:

Regarding Bright Eyes, I don't remember playing "Lifted" to you, but I think you may have heard "I'm wide awake it's morning" which is a more country sounding album (Pete has this one).

Revolution 9 is a fairly obvious choice, but for some weird reason I really like it. Yes it's creepy, difficult, inaccessible (all reasons I quoted for other songs on my list) -- but the whole vibe of it works much better for me. I think the reason is that's such an eclectic album as it is, covering almost every genre imaginable, so why not throw in an avant-garde LSD-influenced sound collage as well? Also, it gets even creepier after reading about the Manson family and how they interpreted some of the songs on the White album (Revolution 9 being one of them).

I also thought it was weird about San Quentin being repeated twice on a row on that Johnny Cash album, but I don't really mind that either. The way I see it, it was risque enough that he was singing that anti-prison song in front of all the prison guards, so why not sing it twice? Also, I remember reading somewhere that there may have been technical reasons why it was included twice, but can't remember the exactly story. And even if there were, they could have easily edited one of them out.

@Ash:

Thanks for the nice comments. I listened to the new Wilco album online once -- I'll admit that it didn't do a heap for me, but I'm hoping it will be a grower. I'll definitely pick it up when it comes out on CD.

I seriously wonder what Jeff Tweedy gets out of LTYT -- it's painful stuff.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03538905483110518568noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8281735.post-74340614337715239972009-06-15T04:13:46.161+10:002009-06-15T04:13:46.161+10:00.... and have you heard the new Wilco album (live ....... and have you heard the new Wilco album (live stream from their own website). Great post yet again - and good to see ...Hey Jiggy

Great post yet again - and good to see a little less time between posts this time around!...and I will resist the urge to call you a name dropper!!

For me, this post demonstrated to me how lacking my musical knowledge is, in that of the songs mentioned I only knew one of them, but my Beach Boys doesn't go beyond the greatest hits album, but for what its worth, I am not a fan of the Sloop John B - don't like that song much, so I hear ya. In terms of Bright Eyes, not sure if its the same album, but I remembering hearing some of his music at your house once, liking what I heard, and then borrowing the disc from you and finding it very hard to get into, so that would kind of make sense.

In terms of what I would include on this list, and it sticks out a mile to me - thats Revolution 9 from the Beatles white album. I just can't get into it, it creeps me out, its a load of garbage, and because it has a similar name to one of my favourite Beatles songs - Revolution, it can be mighty confusing when you try to explain which Revolution song you like.

Another song that sort of fits your topic (but sort of doesn't) is on Johnny Cash's San Quentin album. I don't really like it that San Quentin is repeated, the track after. I get that it was the first time he performed the song, and I get that it would have been a wonderful moment for an inmate when a famous person comes to your priosn and sings a song about it, so I can understand wanting an immediate encore, but what I don't understand is why it wasn't cut from the album, and as I understand it, even the original version, despite cutting other tracks, included both San Quentin's...not that I dislike the song, just that having it straight after the previous one doesn't work for me.

Thanks again for another great post...Deanohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02402296752349739844noreply@blogger.com
