RIP: John Martyn 1948-2009

British folk singer-songwriter John Martyn has passed away in Ireland at the age of 60.

I only have one of his albums, Solid air, which is considered by many critics to be a classic of the folk genre. The title track from that album was Martyn's tribute to his friend and Island label-mate Nick Drake, who was suffering from depression at the time and passed away less than 2 years after the album was released. Another song from that album, May you never, was also made famous by Eric Clapton when it was released on his 1977 album Slowhand.

John was a unique vocalist, amazing songwriter and highly underrated guitarist. While he never had huge commercial success, he had a pretty big cult following, and he will be sadly missed by his fans.

R.I.P.
